TOM CURREN and KELLY SLATER Cranking PIPELINE Morning Session

Tom Curren got the Wave of the Winter on this MID 90's morning session at BACKDOOR. SURFING! It wasn't a perfect day, but there was 1 PERFECT WAVE and it was one of the first waves of the morning. Pretty sure Kelly Slater must have seen it because he was tube hunting as soon as he paddled out. (But I guess Kelly Slater is always hunting down the best and biggest waves at Pipe). Derek Hoffmann was rolling film early that day and got the shot of Tom's wave. Sonny Miller was also filming right down the beach and he got the “looking into the tube” angle. Both angles are in the Sonny Miller film- Searching for Tom Curren. The morning was hit and miss as not all the waves were coming into the reef perfectly. Watch surfers Kelly Slater, Pancho Sullivan, Alex Cox, Ross Clarke-Jones, Todd Chesser, Braden Dias and Davey Boy Gonsalves share waves in this rare raw 16mm film footage surfing clip.

The swell was a bit mixed up and there were some big ones, but not every wave was perfect. Kelly Slater was surfing a John Carper surfboard and Tom Curren was riding a ...? Please remind us in the comments. One of Tom Curren’s first waves was that big perfect Backdoor wave and he kept looking for another one like it the whole session. Pancho Sullivan saw Tom's wave and wanted one for himself- he got some good ones and one really big one but it didn't allow him to get super deep.

Rip Curl needed a shot for their new Search Watch that Tom was wearing, and Ted Grambeau was on the beach to photograph it for the Ad campaign. Ted Grambeau shot a whole roll of 36 slides on that one wave. You can see it ‪@TedGrambeau‬ That wave ended up being the VHS Coverbox for the 1996 Award Winning Surf Movie- Searching for Tom Curren, a film by Sonny Miller.
