When we set out for Lake Michigan on what was supposed to be a warm 60-degree spring day, we had high hopes: sunshine, calm waves, and miles of shoreline perfect for rockhounding and fossil hunting. But Lake Michigan had other plans. The moment we stepped out of the vehicle, we were greeted not by warmth, but by a biting wind and a sharp drop in temperature—40 degrees and gusty. Welcome to the Midwest in spring.
Despite the weather throwing us a curveball, we weren’t about to let that stop us. Armed with warm layers (thankfully we packed extras), our rockhounding tools, and a love for the hunt, we hit the beach determined to make the most of it—and wow, are we glad we did. The shoreline may have been cold, but the finds were on fire.
Join us in this episode as we brave the wind and cold for a day of rockhounding and fossil hunting along the Lake Michigan shoreline. This video captures not only the beauty and unpredictability of spring rockhounding in Wisconsin but also showcases some truly remarkable rock and fossil finds you won’t want to miss.
📍Where We Went Rockhounding on Lake Michigan
Our destination was a stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline known for its layered geological history and abundance of natural treasures. The western edge of Lake Michigan, especially along the Wisconsin shoreline, is one of the best places in the Midwest for discovering rocks, fossils, and other hidden gems.
What makes this location special for rockhounding is the sheer diversity. From weathered limestone beds to glacial till deposits and smoothed wave-washed gravel bars, Lake Michigan provides a natural display of ancient Earth processes—and it spills those secrets right onto the shore if you know where to look.
On warmer days, this area is a paradise for fossil hunting. But on this day, with 40-degree winds ripping off the lake and cold sand stinging our cheeks, it felt more like an expedition than a casual stroll. And yet, that made every find that much more rewarding.
🪨 What We Found – Rocks and Fossils Galore!
Despite the frigid wind and numb fingers, we managed to uncover some incredible specimens. This was one of those days where the effort paid off big time. Among our best finds:
Fossilized coral: Some stunning pieces of horn coral and tabulate coral, a reminder of when this region was a shallow tropical sea over 400 million years ago. These fossils are common in Silurian-aged rock beds, and Lake Michigan loves to churn them up in spring.
Brachiopods: We found a few well-preserved brachiopods, a classic Lake Michigan fossil. These ancient marine animals once blanketed the sea floor and now show up as little ridged treasures in the sand and gravel.
Chert and flint nodules: Always a favorite for knapping and cutting, these beautifully smoothed pieces are often hidden among the more drab stones. Their glossy luster stands out when the sun hits them just right—even if the sun wasn’t exactly cooperating this trip.
Lake-washed limestone: We picked up some really cool examples of eroded limestone packed with visible fossils and mineral streaks. These make great display pieces or bases for lapidary projects.
Red and orange granite pebbles: Not fossiliferous, but gorgeous nonetheless—remnants of glacial movement and natural forces that transported rocks hundreds of miles to rest here along Lake Michigan’s edge.
Cold weather rockhounding definitely isn't for everyone, but it can yield fantastic results—especially after storms or early in the season when the beaches haven't been picked over.
