On the afternoon of 26 December 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake triggered destructive waves that struck the shores of Penang and Kedah, #Malaysia. The #tsunami claimed 68 lives and caused approximately 3.4 million US dollars in damages.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the Malaysian Government, CSOs, the private sector, and local communities, the areas affected by the tsunami have been rebuilt to become better, safer, and more resilient.
This video, commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami, honours the resilience of the survivors and affected communities as well as their ability to recover from catastrophic disasters.
