Road Trip on the Edens Expressway Outbound (away from Downtown Chicago) through the far north side of Chicago and the near north suburbs of Chicago up to the Cook-Lake County line. This is the first expressway that opened in the Chicago area back in 1951 to help traffic bound for Milwaukee get there faster without clogging local roads. The stretch from the Kennedy Expy to Wilmette feels almost like a gentle roller coaster since the road was not originally built for today's expressway speeds! It can get congested during peak travel periods but otherwise moves pretty freely. The Edens Spur that connects the Edens Expy to the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) feels almost like a rural freeway through the woods even though the area is still technically urban! It is currently undergoing a full reconstruction which will be complete at the end of 2019.
This road passes through large patches of woods and crosses several streams. It is beautiful up here although expensive. Some of the best schools in the country are up here including New Trier High School, Loyola Academy, and Northwestern University.
Several movies have been filmed up here including Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, Planes Trains and Automobiles, and Dennis the Menace. After Skokie Boulevard merges onto the Edens, we pass by the High School Uncle Buck was filmed (today known as New Trier Northfield) Also, several actors were raised in this area including Bill Murray (Wilmette), Gary Sinise (Highland Park), Virginia Madsen (Winnetka), Harrison Ford (Park Ridge), and John Hughes (Northbrook).
