Exploring Mar a Lago on Google Earth reveals a long narrow barrier island estate stretching between the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Worth Lagoon in Palm Beach.
The property covers about twenty acres and anchors one of the most expensive coastlines in the United States.
The estate was completed in 1927 for Marjorie Merriweather Post and designed by Marion Sims Wyeth with interiors by Joseph Urban. It combines Mediterranean Revival and Spanish styles with courtyards, towers, tile roofs, and ocean facing colonnades.
The main house has more than one hundred rooms and sits on the highest natural point of the barrier island.
From above you see the protected lagoon to the west, the Atlantic coast to the east, and the dense Palm Beach grid surrounding the club.
The area forms a narrow storm exposed strip shaped by shifting sands, inlets, coastal engineering, and strict preservation rules that protect historic architecture and limit high rise development.
Today Mar a Lago functions as a private club and the primary residence of Donald Trump. It has hosted heads of state, national security meetings, and presidential events.
It is often described as the modern White House by the Sea because key staff, Secret Service teams, and communications infrastructure operate on site during presidential visits.
The complex includes guest suites, ballrooms, dining rooms, pools, tennis courts, service buildings, and a waterfront dock on the lagoon.
The surrounding region includes West Palm Beach, Palm Beach International Airport, and a long chain of barrier islands stretching north and south along the Florida coast.
Seen from the air, Mar a Lago stands out as one of the most geographically dramatic presidential era properties in the United States.
