Sixteen homes were destroyed by fire in Koolewong on the Central Coast two days ago, with the area now declared a crime scene as police investigate potential arson. Residents have been temporarily allowed back to collect essentials, but those with gutted properties are barred from entry while forensic investigators examine evidence markers and the area is assessed for deadly debris including asbestos. Jerry cans were reportedly found on Koolewong Mountain on the day of the fire, forming part of an extensive police investigation that could keep the area secured for up to two weeks.
