LAMU _ The Last Authentic Swahili Town, KENYA _ a Cultural Journey, Coastal Ambient Sounds l 4K

Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town on Lamu Island, which in turn is a part of the Lamu Archipelago in Kenya. Situated 341 kilometres (212 mi) by road northeast of Mombasa that ends at Mokowe Jetty, from where the sea channel has to be crossed to reach Lamu Island, it is the headquarter of Lamu County and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.The town contains the Lamu Fort on the seafront, constructed under Fumo Madi ibn Abi Bakr, the sultan of Pate, and was completed after his death in the early 1820s. Lamu is also home to 23 mosques, including the Riyadha Mosque, built in 1900, and a donkey sanctuary. Lamu is a predominantly Muslim area hence a rather strict observance of muslim traditions and customs. The main mode of transport around the archipelago is by boat and on land, the donkey is still very useful although lately there has been an introduction of the motorbike taxis (Boda Boda).
Lamu is one of the last outposts of genuine Swahili culture, architecture, language, fashion, art and cuisine. The food in Lamu is quite spectacular especially seafood. This video focused more on the waterfront areas to capture the general mood, sights and sounds. Also included is a small walk in the back streets of the town and a tour of the old fort at the heart of the island. ENJOY!
