When starting to learn Korean, it's very often confusing why the same letter ㄹ can sometimes sound like an English L, but other times like an R. In this easy video you can learn the two basic rules of thumb, namely:
When ㄹ is followed by a vowel, it will sound more like an R.
When ㄹ is followed by a consonant, or when it is at the end of a word, or when it appears twice directly after each other, it will sound more like an L.
It is important to remember though that ㄹ is NOT identical to an English L or R, it has its own pronunciation and way of positioning your tongue in your mouth somewhere in between the two English letters. It's just that foreigners perceive the sound as an L or R since it is closest to these letters.
The 10 words covered in this video are:
알아 [ara] - I know
오늘 [oneul] - Today
그래 [geurae] - Okay/Sure
실은 [sireun] - Actually
뭐라고? [mworago] - What did you say?
들어가 [deureoga] - Go in
갈게 [galge] - I'm going
사실 [sasil] - Actually
빨리 [palli] - Hurry/Quickly
그럴리가 [geureolliga] - No way
Note how we can apply the two rules we learned to each word.
