Hear from Morgan and Vannesa on today's Liberation Line as they discuss the impacts Domestic Violence has on our sisters in the Black community. On this Liberation Line, we are joined by Karma Cottman, Co-Founder and CEO of Ujima: The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, and Kimya Motley, Survivor, and Chief Communications Officer at All Call to Men.
If you or someone you know needs support, the National Domestic Violence Hotline offers resources and support 24/7. Call 800.799.SAFE (7233) if you need help.
Domestic violence is a national crisis, but for Black women, the impact is compounded by racism, socioeconomic inequities, and a long-standing mistrust in law enforcement. Many women suffer in silence, isolated, without the proper resources or support systems in place. This episode is dedicated to breaking those barriers and ensuring that every sister knows there is help, hope, and a way out.
Key Discussions:
The Numbers Don’t Lie: Statistics that expose the tragic reality Black women face in abusive relationships. From emotional to financial abuse, Black women are suffering at alarming rates.
Critical Safety Planning: How to create a personalized safety plan that prepares you for moments of crisis—whether it's packing emergency bags, knowing the safe places to turn to, or teaching your children safety measures.
Financial Empowerment for Survivors: Tips on protecting your financial independence, maintaining emergency funds, and safeguarding vital personal documents.
How to Document Abuse: Understanding the importance of documentation when seeking legal protection, like restraining orders, and how to build a case when law enforcement may dismiss warning signs.
Breaking Generational Cycles: Hear stories from survivors who escaped abusive relationships, offering hope to those who feel trapped and underscoring the importance of building community to protect each other.
This episode is a lifeline for anyone experiencing domestic violence and a call to action for our community to stand together and protect one another. We can no longer ignore the stories of Black women enduring violence behind closed doors. Together, we will fight for justice, dignity, and safety for all.
