Social & Ethical Concerns of Liberation Theology in Latin America

Liberation theology is a movement that emerged in the 1960s and 1970s in Latin America, which emphasized the role of the Church in the struggle for social and economic justice for the poor and oppressed. It emerged as a response to the poverty, inequality, and political oppression that were widespread in the region at the time.

The social concerns of liberation theology included issues such as poverty, land reform, worker's rights, and indigenous rights. It also sought to empower the poor to take an active role in their own liberation and advocated for the Church to become more involved in political and social issues.

M. Daniel Carroll R. (PhD, University of Sheffield) is Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies and Pedagogy at Wheaton College and Graduate School in Wheaton, Illinois. He previously taught for many years at El Seminario Teológico Centroamericano in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and then at Denver Seminary, where he founded IDEAL, a Spanish language training program. Carroll is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including The Bible and Borders: Hearing God’s Word on Immigration, Wrestling with the Violence of God: Soundings in the Old Testament, and a major commentary on the book of Amos.
