45 Minutes of Trains at Maitland during Steamfest 2024; Passenger, Steam & Freight Trains

In this video we visit Maitland station during the 2024 Hunter Valley Steamfest; one of the premiere annual heritage train events in New South Wales. Steamfest sees multiple steam locomotives and heritage railcars operate trips around the Hunter Valley based out of Maitland station. Steamfest took place between the 13th & 14th April 2024 and saw steam locomotives C35 3526 and AD60 6029 (Beyer-Garratt) made an appearance.

We mainly see clips around Maitland station that were filmed during day 2 of Steamfest. Maitland is served by NSW Trainlink Hunter Line commuter services between Newcastle and Dungong & Scone, as well as the regional North Coast and North Western line services. On the Hunter Line we mainly see Hunter Railcars with a lone Endeavour Railcar also making an appearance. We also see the Xplorer from Armidale & Moree heading towards Sydney, and the XPT heading towards Grafton.

The Hunter Valley is well known for its numerous coal trains which operate at high frequency between the coal mines and the coal ports at Port Waratah and Kooragang Island. We see loaded and unloaded coal trains from Pacific National, Aurizon, and East Coast Rail (or whatever name they go by these days, I've lost count). We also see a Pacific National sugar/cement train too.

Maitland station opened in 1880 as West Maitland as a single platform, originally as an additional station serving the town as the area was already served by train stations at Victoria Street, East Maitland, and High Street. Over time the station grew to be the principle station serving the town, with platforms 2 & 3 with an overhead footbridge built in 1914, and platforms 5 & 6 built in 1933. The station was renamed to Maitland in 1949. The station is included in the New South Wales State Heritage Register.
