Navy SEALs first deployed to Vietnam in 1966, conducting covert operations in the treacherous river deltas and mangrove swamps of the Mekong region. These elite warriors operated in small teams of 6-14 men, slipping through waterways under cover of darkness with their faces painted in heavy green camouflage. The Viet Cong came to fear these mysterious fighters emerging from the swamps, dubbing them "the men with green faces" and placing bounties on their heads. Despite never numbering more than a few hundred in-country, SEAL units achieved an extraordinary kill ratio of roughly 2,000 enemy casualties to just 48 SEAL deaths. Their legendary stealth and effectiveness transformed them into phantom-like figures in Vietnamese folklore—deadly ghosts who could materialize from the jungle waters without warning.
