Junaid Qureshi: Kashmiri Intellectual, Policy Expert, and Advocate for Peace
Mr. Junaid Qureshi is a prominent Kashmiri intellectual and policy analyst. He holds a Master’s degree in International Law from VU University Amsterdam and currently serves as Director of the European Foundation for South Asian Studies (EFSAS), a leading independent, EU-accredited think tank based in the Netherlands.
Junaid comes from a politically significant family. His father, Hashim Qureshi, and uncle, Ashraf Qureshi, were involved in the 1971 hijacking of the Indian airplane Ganga, which was diverted from its Srinagar–Jammu route and forced to land in Lahore.
Over the years, Junaid has contributed columns to various Kashmiri newspapers and has published widely on terrorism, human rights, the Jammu and Kashmir conflict, and South Asian geopolitics in both Indian and Pakistani media. He has also written regularly for the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA)—a NATO-affiliated body—offering opinion pieces and research analyses on foreign policy and security issues.
As a political commentator, Mr. Qureshi brings deep insight into the cultural, religious, and socio-political dynamics of South Asia, especially Jammu and Kashmir and India–Pakistan relations. His views have been featured across European and South Asian media outlets, including radio, television, and print.
He has spoken at major international forums such as the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council in Geneva and the European Parliament in Brussels. He has also lectured at leading universities including Oxford, King’s College London, the University of Leicester, VU Amsterdam, LUISS University in Rome, the Central University of Kashmir, and other prestigious institutions such as the Royal Asiatic Society in London and the Crans Montana Forum in Geneva.
A strong advocate for youth engagement in peacebuilding, Mr. Qureshi organized one of the first youth conferences in Srinagar in 2016, drawing over 200 participants who unanimously rejected violence in the region. Under his leadership, EFSAS continues to offer scholarships to students in Jammu and Kashmir.
Originally from Srinagar—the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir—Mr. Qureshi has family on both sides of the Line of Control, including in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir. He is married and has two children.
