DeathCap Amps builds The Thylacine - a low-watt version of the Sunn Model T amp + preamp unit in timelapse. This video features the fun parts of the build - the Assembly and Wiring process, first start-up of the amp, and a short demo/testing the amp. Sit back, relax and watch the process of building a hand-wired guitar tube amplifier from scratch and see it COME TO LIFE!
I know some of you are probably going to ask, why did you use a de-soldering gun (pump) to do most of your soldering. I don't always use it for soldering but it distributes heat so much better on larger components like turrets, switch terminals, socket pins, etc. It takes less dwell time and ensures no cold solder joints as compared with my standard iron. And if I make mistakes or use too much solder on a joint, I can quickly remove excess at the same time for the perfect amount. It is a large and clunky tool for the job but sometimes for hand-wired turret board amp designs like these, I do get faster, better and cleaner connections. Just a preference I guess.
This is NOT a full build from start to finish. There is a lot of the process not included in this particular video like building the head case, tolexing, mounting the chassis, adding hardware (corners, handle, feet, grill covers, etc; also designing, building and populating the turret boards with components; measuring, drilling, and labeling the chassis and a few other things like that. But I may do another video like this in the future showing all of those steps. Hope you enjoy!
