History Time: U-505 is one of four remaining German U-Boats in the world today. Captured by the Allies in 1944, the U-Boat is now at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, IL. U-Boats primarily operated in the Atlantic, but long-range "Monsun Gruppe" wolfpacks operated in the Indian & Pacific Oceans as well. In addition to disrupting shipping, they delivered spies to the mainland U.S. Intel later revealed that U Boats were proposed as platforms to launch V-2 rocket attacks on major U.S. cities (though none ever occurred).
The Nazi Germany Kriegsmarine constructed 1,162 U-Boats (submarines) for WWII. 785 were destroyed and sit at the bottom of the world's oceans. Nearly 50 have never been located. 28,0000 of 40,000 (70%) German U-Boat submariners perished at sea in this "iron coffin."
