Ep 232 – Nababeep – The Largest Copper Mining Town in Namaqualand!
We had a very short drive from Okiep to Nababeep and on this road we happened upon the Jakkalswater Guest Farm at the foot of a mountain in the heart of Namaqualand. What a beautiful location, we took a short drive through just to see what it looked like. We had to get our gravel fix in and because there was no gravel road to Nababeep, we took a short drive on the Nababeeppoort road for about 2km, turned around and headed back to Nababeep. At the turnoff to the town was a sign showing us that the mine was a tourist attraction and that really excited us. Unfortunately we couldn’t get in because they started mining for copper oxide at the mine again in 2019. The museum is right next to the entrance of the mine, which was closed. We could see Clara though, the steam engine which used to transport copper ore to Port Nolloth from 1891 to 1941. We then took a slow drive through the town and I must say it is a neat and clean place.
