Bike Friday - Service - How to Travel With a Tandem Bicycle

How does it work?

There are 7 simple steps to follow:

1. First, you open your nylon Travel Bag and lie it on the ground to the left side of your Tandem Two'sDay.

2. Second, remove the seat masts and stem riser from your tandem bicycle and set them aside. To remove your seat masts you'll need a combination 5 & 6mm allen wrench that Bike Friday provides for you. Simply loosen the bolts and pull from the saddle to remove the seat masts from the bike. The stem riser (to which your handlebars are attached) will stay connected to the bike via the brake cables, so lie it down close to the tandem once you've removed it.

3. Next, it's time to remove the front wheel. *Note, you do not need to remove the rear wheel for packing the bike into the Travel Bag. To remove the front wheel you simply need to pull the quick release tab forward to release its clamp. Once you've released the clamp, you'll need to unscrew the nut on the axle, opposite the tab, until it is loose enough to pull free from the fork tips. Set the wheel aside.

4. Lay the tandem bicycle on its side and un-clamp the quick release on rear of the bicycle frame. You won't need to do any unscrewing as you did with the front wheel. Make sure the kickstand of the bike is folded up into place, then fold the whole rear of the bicycle down and forward until it stops easily. Move to the front of the bicycle and undo the quick release clamp on the front of the frame. Carefully fold the front of the bike down and towards the rear until it nestles easily into place against the rest of the frame.

5. After the tandem has been folded its time to place all of the rest of the remaining pieces into the Travel Case, including the seat masts and the front wheel. Focusing on keeping the items as tightly nestled as possible will help keep everything as compact as possible for your travels.

6. Drape the lower flap over the top of the tandem and begin zipping the bag up, from the corners, around the bicycle. Fold the top of the Travel Bag over the bike and clip the flap to the side of the bag.

7. Lift your custom folding tandem bike up using the hand-holds on the bag and take it with you on all of your travels!
