On 27 September 2025, the historic Robben Island in Cape Town witnessed a stirring reunion of former political prisoners, marked by deep reflection, tribute, and resolve. At this powerful gathering, Hon. Sanet Steenkamp, Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, delivered an impassioned address to those present.
Her speech commemorated the bravery, sacrifice, and enduring spirit of freedom fighters from Namibia and South Africa, many of whom were held on Robben Island. The occasion also featured the unveiling of six statues honoring prominent liberation figures, as well as the dedication of a Wall of Remembrance—the most prominent statue among them honoring Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo.
