Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) - AKA My Partner The Ghost in America - is my favourite of all the ITC action adventure series of the 1960s.
The premise: Jeff Randall (played by Mike Pratt) and Marty Hopkirk (played by Kenneth Cope) are struggling private investigators. In the first episode of the series Marty is killed but shortly thereafter reappears as a ghost who is only visible to Jeff Randall. Even Marty's wife, Jeannie (played by Annette Andre) can't see or hear him. Naturally Marty's invisibility cloak is a great asset for investigating crimes and it provides plenty of comedic possibilities.
If you watched Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) during its original run in 1969 (or the first couple of repeats in the early 1970s) then you'll remember that the opening theme tune included a voiceover with Marty the ghost explaining the premise of the show with the words 'Jeff - It's alright. Jeannie can't see or hear me. Nobody can. Only you, Jeff, only you'.
My recollection was slightly different as I thought he said 'Jeff - It's me, Marty. Jeannie can't see or hear me. Nobody can. Only you, Jeff. Only you'. Just goes to show that our memories play tricks on us.
Subsequent repeats have dropped this mini-monologue leaving many viewers confused as to why the opening is not how they remembered it, but here's the original audio to enjoy again.
That's not quite the end of the story though. The intro sequence of the more recent repeats (using orange graphics and without the voiceover) was in fact the first opening sequence to be produced, but it was swapped out in favour of the voiceover version with the graveyard scenes prior to the series being first broadcast in the UK. Thus it's a moot point as to which really is the original.
The wonderful Edwin Astley - also know for The Saint and Danger Man theme tunes - composed the Randall and Hopkirk theme in a minor key for the harpsichord. He also composed the incidental music for the series which I have always felt was the cherry on the icing as it created a fusion of melancholy, mystery and mischief.
The powers that be at ATV were concerned that the show should not be too comedic as American audience might find it disrespectful, given that the premise of the series is the death of one of the protagonists. On the other hand, Mike Pratt and Kenneth Cope were keen to inject more humour and so they constantly lobbied for this. They were also keen to ensure that Jeannie played a more central role and so, after a day's shooting, they and Annette Andre would sit down and review the scripts and petition for more opportunities for her to be part of the storyline. I am very glad they did!
