BUN or "Blood urea nitrogen" is one of the parameters measured to identify kidney function at that moment. In other words, a BUN test is also known by other names such as a urea nitrogen test and serum BUN. BUN indicates the urea nitrogen made in the body during protein breakdown. It is then removed from the body through your urine. A decline in kidney function could be due to a disease or kidney damage which can ultimately cause an increase in BUN or blood urea nitrogen.
It is basically a less specific indicator of a compromised kidney function than glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and creatinine clearance which Robert has touched upon. This is because BUN values can vary with someone's kidney function. Your BUN values may be low if you eating a low protein diet or your diet is not in line with your goals to better your kidneys' overall health. Whereas your BUN values may increase with a high-protein diet. In other words, blood urea nitrogen is a level of how much toxins are in your body because if that bun is higher there's other metabolic waste that we don't measure on blood tests that will be higher thus if that bun is higher so you have a lot of toxins built up. Robert reiterates to always stay hydrated because your BUN level will increase if you are often dehydrated.
With kidney disease, you may be restricted on your fluid intake so it is very important to make
sure before you go drinking excessive water. If you have kidney issues you should let your doctor know because in some later stages you could have swelling and could have fluid restrictions. Lowering protein generally almost always helps the kidney and helps the kidney disease and whatever issues you may have. To lower your protein consumption we can look to switch to
easier foods to digest protein better.
Preferably one's that don't cause as many toxins so Robert recommends looking at fewer red meats and take a look at plant-based proteins because he believes they are way better and provide many benefits. One big way you can get rid of all those toxins is through your bowel movement. Robert mentions pooping regularly at least having one bowel movement a day is what he recommends. In kidney disease, it's very common for patients to have gut problems so it's important to drink a proper amount of water and having enough fiber in your diet. Overall, keeping yourself hydrated and following a healthy diet will decrease your BUN levels significantly.
