Elk in Winter

The rutting season is over and winter has arrived. This is the most stressful time of the year for elk. Bulls are worn out from the rut. Cows are pregnant and food is scarce. In all elk, calves, cows and bulls, their energy reserves are at their lowest levels.

Bulls retain their antlers well into March but eventually they will fall off. They begin to grow new ones in the spring.
