Esperanto is an artificial language created in 1887 by Polish ophthalmologist Ludwig Lazarus Zamenhof, who published it under the pseudonym "Doktoro Esperanto" (Doctor Hopeful). Designed as an easy-to-learn international auxiliary language to foster global communication and understanding, Esperanto features a highly regular grammar with only 16 basic rules, no exceptions, and a logical structure that draws vocabulary primarily from Romance and Germanic languages with some Slavic influences. The language uses a phonetic alphabet where each letter represents exactly one sound, making pronunciation straightforward, and employs a systematic approach to word formation through prefixes, suffixes, and root combinations that allow speakers to create new words intuitively. Despite never achieving Zamenhof's dream of becoming a universal second language, Esperanto has developed into a living language with an estimated 100,000 to 2 million speakers worldwide, a rich literature including original works and translations, active online communities, annual international congresses, and even native speakers who learned it as their first language from Esperanto-speaking parents. The language has faced political suppression throughout history, particularly under Nazi Germany and Stalin's Soviet Union, where it was viewed as a threat to national identity, yet it has persisted and adapted to the digital age with strong internet presence, language learning apps, and cultural movements that continue to promote its ideals of international understanding and linguistic equality.
