Hip Economics & Ammo Cases: Untold Story of The Music Never Stopped

“The Music Never Stopped” isn’t just a set-closer — it’s the sound of a band holding things together at the edge. After breaking from Warner Bros. and launching their own label, the Dead tried what they called “hip economics,” keeping the operation alive by moving small bursts of underground cash through the system. By early 1975, that experiment fell apart. Money dried up, debts piled up, and manager Ron Rakow was literally keeping the studio open with ammo cases full of cash from a smuggler known as Cousin David.

In the middle of that financial freefall, Bob Weir and John Perry Barlow wrote the song over the phone — a riff in one direction, late-summer imagery in the other — shaping a self-referential celebration of the Dead’s roaming musical world. The song debuted on August 13, 1975 at the Great American Music Hall, the same night Rakow announced the now-legendary “three-napkin” deal with United Artists that saved Blues for Allah and ended the band’s dream of a fully independent label.
