ZkSync is a layer 2 solution that employs zk-rollups as its scaling method to transmit Ether and ERC-20 tokens. Zk-rollups roll up transactions from the Ethereum mainnet and provide transaction proofs, just like optimistic rollups do. Simply put, many transactions are combined into one and authenticated and secured by Ethereum.
The layer 2 protocol presents itself as an Ethereum-based scaling and privacy engine. It is based on a zero-knowledge (ZK) rollup architecture allowing infinite scaling, as the name would imply. Systems that are zero-knowledge-proof are thought to provide proactive cryptographic security.
