A portrait of famous foley pioneer Charles Foley. Foley is no longer his practice these days. He’s just over 4 years retired.
I met Charles at a pre show event for a film premier, where I learned about his fascinating film history as a Foley artist. ( we actually got lost in conversation and missed the start of the film )
He’s a quirky and unlikely chap, proud of an era that he said had all but disappeared. Aside from a couple of contentious cult films, sadly many of his films were brushed under the red carpet. ( box office disasters)
My gut instinct was to dive deeper…..and so I did. We were eventually invited to Charles’ house for an afternoon, where we shot with him and interviewed him.
He caught us off guard many times during filming as he seemed to drift in and out of his own world. Charles appeared trapped in a no-mans land of his past life and retirement.
What he has gifted to us was a fascinating 'slice of life' vignette of what it's like to retire from the film industry.
