Mi Zhou is deeply passionate and dedicated to organ repertoire and its performance. Ms. Zhou earned the Doctor of Musical Arts in Organ Performance at the University of Michigan, where she studied with professors James Kibbie, Todd Wilson and Nicole Keller. She began her focus on organ performance at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she completed the Master of Music degree in Organ and the Graduate Performance Diploma under Dr. John Walker, being twice awarded with Peabody’s prestigious Bruce R. Eicher Award in Organ Performance. Prior to this, she finished her Bachelor of Arts in E-Organ (Electone) at the Shanghai Conservatory, where she was awarded third prize in the classic division at the Ringway International E-Organ Competition. Currently, Ms. Zhou serves as the Choral Accompanist/Assistant Organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while also refining her skills, obtaining an Artist Diploma at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Versailles, France, with Jean Baptiste Robin.
As an emerging concert organist, Mi has performed solo and collaborative concerts at various venues in the United States, with highlights including recitals at St. Peter’s Church (NYC, NY), Zion Lutheran Church (Baltimore, MD), and National City Christian Church (Washington D.C.) Additionally, collaborative concerts featured a Brass and Organ recital at Emmanuel Episcopal Church with the Peabody Brass Ensemble and a performance of Francis Poulenc’s Concerto for Organ, Strings and Timpani with the Peabody Orchestra at Griswold Hall. Future engagements include performances at National City Christian Church in Washington D.C., and at the Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival in Charleston, South Carolina.
As a Chinese organist, Ms. Zhou passionately advocates for the integration of Chinese folk songs into new organ music. In 2019 she and Singaporean composer Wei Gu were awarded the American Guild of Organists’ Student Commissioning Project grant to collaborate in the composition of a new work for the organ. In a recent recital, she premiered three organ works infused with Chinese folk songs.
