The story tells how during the churning of the Ocean of Milk (Kshirasagara), the Devtas and Asuras, with Lord Shiva’s guidance, used Mount Mandara, Lord Vishnu as the turtle, and Vasuki as the rope. Many treasures emerged, but also the deadly poison Halahala, which Lord Shiva drank, earning the name Neelkantha. Later, the Asuras stole Goddess Lakshmi and hid her in a cave at Gupkar. In anger, Lord Shiva created Goddess Zeashta and Vira Vaitala, who defeated the Asuras and freed Lakshmi. Blessed by Shiva, Zeashta became a protector of humanity, with her shrine near Gupkar in Srinagar, where devotees offer Tehar (yellow rice) during the month of Zyesth. The shrine is known for granting wisdom, prosperity, and success.
