Boons and curses are two sides of the same cosmic law. Even the gods are not free from them, and Lord Vishnu himself has faced their effects in every era. Because of Sage Bhrigu’s curse, Vishnu was destined to suffer the pain of separation from his beloved in every incarnation - as Ram from Sita, and as Krishna from Radha. When Sage Narad’s pride in his celibacy was shattered, he cursed Vishnu to be born as a mortal who would long for a woman, with monkeys aiding him, a fate fulfilled in the Ramayana. Bali’s wife, Tara, cursed Ram that he too would experience the grief of losing his wife and that in his next birth, he would die at Bali’s hands, which came true when Krishna was struck by the hunter Jara. Finally, Queen Gandhari’s sorrowful curse led to the destruction of Krishna’s Yadava clan, reminding us that even God is bound by karma, and no one, not even Vishnu, can escape the justice of their own deeds.
