The Shanghai Museum of Natural History has more than 290,000 collections, including natural and human historical relics from East China, the whole country and the world, belonging to five categories: plants, animals, paleontology, geology and humanities, including more than 150,000 plant specimens, breastfeeding More than 4,000 animal specimens, more than 10,000 pieces of fish, birds, and amphibians and reptiles, nearly 33,000 insect specimens, more than 50,000 other invertebrate specimens, more than 5,000 geological specimens, and more than 8,000 paleontological specimens , more than 3,500 pieces of humanities and folklore.

上海自然博物馆有29万余件藏品，包括来自华东地区乃至全国及世界各地的自然界和人类历史遗物，分别隶属于植物、动物、古生物、地质及人文五大类，其中植物标本15万余件，哺乳动物标本4千余件，鱼类、鸟类、两栖爬行类各1万余件，昆虫标本近3.3万件，其他无脊椎标本5万余件，地质标本5千余件，古生物8千余件，人文民俗类3500余件。

上海自然博物馆以“自然•人•和谐”为主题，以“演化”为主线，从“过程”、“现象”、“机制”和“文化”入手， “演化的乐章”、“生命的画卷”、“文明的史诗”三大主题板块下设十个常设主题展区，阐述自然界中纵横交错、相辅相成的种种关系。

“演化的乐章”将回溯自然界波澜壮阔、跌宕起伏的演化历程，引领公众了解宇宙和地球的由来以及生命演化过程中的大事件，剖析生命演化的内在机制。

“生命的画卷”将带领公众走进多姿多彩的生命世界，让他们在领略自然界的神奇与美丽的同时，了解各种生物为了生存和繁衍而演化出基于各种关系的“智慧”。

“文明的史诗”将带领公众回溯人类文明的兴衰历程，阐释人类文明在起源、发展、兴替过程中与自然环境的依存关系，体现文化多样性与环境多样性之间的密切关系；帮助公众认识在文明发展的不同阶段人类与自然环境之间的“冲突与和谐”，感悟认识自然、尊重自然，与自然和谐相处，是人类和人类文明可持续发展的前提。
