On a freezing January night in 1950, Royal Navy submarine HMS Truculent collided with a Swedish tanker in the Thames Estuary, just off Sheerness. Within minutes, the submarine sank, and 64 men went down in one of Britain’s worst peacetime naval disasters.
In this documentary, we uncover the full story of the Truculent disaster — from her service in the Second World War to the tragic events of 12 January 1950. What caused the collision? Why did so few survive even after escaping? And how did this tragedy change submarine safety forever?
Filmed on location at the Thames Estuary and the graves of the victims, this video explores survivor accounts, the official inquiry, and the legacy of the disaster.
