A joint family system is a traditional Islamic family structure where married children and their elderly parents live together in one house. However, there are three issues that undermine the traditional joint family situation: the "In-Law is Death" practice, which involves women covering themselves from visitors, and the etiquette of privacy from blood relations ordained in the Quran.

The practice of women dressing and interacting before non-Mahram residents of the house, such as male servants or brothers-in-law, is in defiance of the commands of Islam. The Quran commands young children to be prevented from entering their bedrooms without prior permission, which is contrary to the traditional joint family situation.

Married Muslim women are entitled to private accommodation in Islam, which preserves their privacy from their husbands' relatives. Sheikh Salih Al-Munajjid states that what meets her needs is sufficient, such as a room in good condition with a kitchen and bathroom, unless the wife has stipulated larger accommodation in her marriage contract.
