MPs have approved the government bill to take control of Scunthorpe steelworks

MPs have approved plans to save British Steel’s Scunthorpe blast furnaces after an extraordinary sitting of the Commons on Saturday.

British Steel, which has been owned by Jingye since 2020, has said that its two blast furnaces in Scunthorpe were “no longer financially sustainable”.

Talks between the government and Jingye have broken down and last month the group rejected a £500 million bailout plan proposed by the UK government.
