The bishops at the Council of Nicaea adopted the word homoousios (“one essence”) to describe Jesus as sharing the same “essence/ousia” with God the Father. The word homoousios proved exceptionally problematic. Fr. Demetrios Bathrellos, Associate Professor of Theology at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, unpacks the theological and philosophical underpinnings of the word and explains how it is to be understood in the context of the theology of the Nicene Creed.
