This talk looks at a collaboration that moves between mathematics and art. As two practitioners from different backgrounds, we start with some of our influences – interests in form, pattern, shape making and material exploration. Several approaches to form come together, between digital and physical generation, hand working and machine control. This includes looking at the way that trees grow and how these characteristics can engage with tessellation and tiling, as well as finding surprise in the outcomes of algorithmic processes.
The main piece is an engagement with Penrose tiling. We start with a simple generation of the tiling, and then explore a set of deformations that can create a continuously variable space of patterns. Our interest is in what happens when bringing the abstract pattern into the physical world. We worked with wood, which brings its own patterns and layers as well as a third dimension. This creates an interplay between the material, the tool that carves and the underlying geometry.
