Alain was one of the most original composers of the 20th century and the qualities of his works are comparable in ways to that of Olivier Messiaen and Henri Dutilleux.
The Litanies is the third of his 'three organ pieces'. It was completed on the Feast of the Assumption in 1937, and dedicatee Virginie Schildge-Bianchini premièred the piece later in May in the United States.
It was published in 1939 by Alphonse Leduc. In 1995 the composer's brother Olivier published a two-piano version. Today, the piece is indubitably the most famous work of the composer.
