First Time in MOSSEL BAY, South Africa - Where the Portuguese Landed in 1488!

In this video, I explore the fascinating coastal town of Mossel Bay (Afrikaans: Mosselbaai, meaning “Bay of Mussels”) for the first time. Although I technically spent a night here more than two decades ago, I barely saw anything — so this was my first real time experiencing Mossel Bay properly. And I was truly surprised by how much there is to uncover.

Rich in history and blessed with striking geography, Mossel Bay is located roughly 400 km east of Cape Town and 400 km west of Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), making it a natural midpoint along South Africa’s southern coastline — and the heart of the Garden Route.

But it’s in the realm of history where this town truly stands tall — not only in the South African context, but also in the broader story of maritime exploration and the Spice Routes.

In February 1488, Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias and his crew made landfall here, near where the Dias Museum Complex now stands. This marked the first recorded European landing on South African soil. During this visit, they discovered a freshwater spring, which became an essential resupply point. Dias had been commissioned by King John II of Portugal to find a new sea route to India — a mission that would shape the future of maritime exploration.

Although Dias didn’t make it to India himself, his pioneering voyage paved the way for Vasco da Gama, who successfully reached India via the Cape route in 1498 (which I explore in my St Helena Bay vlog).

The vlog kicks off at the iconic Santos Beach — and it’s a little personal for me. I read that the Santos Pavilion was inspired by the seaside architecture of Brighton, UK (where I now live), so I was keen to see a slice of my overseas hometown in my home country! While there, I also chat with a local who has a Sussex connection — what are the chances?

After grabbing a coffee at the Pavilion (now a lovely beachside restaurant), I visit the unique Santos Express Train Lodge, where Kim gives me a tour of this creative accommodation concept — sleeping in a train carriage right by the sea!

Next, I stop at the Tourist Information Office, pick up a map, and learn more about the town’s name and origins. Then it’s off to the Bartholomeu Dias Museum Complex, where I explore several key attractions, including the famous Post Office Tree, one of the earliest forms of “postal service” in South Africa.

Back in town, I wander through Mossel Bay’s streets, visiting landmarks such as the Dutch Reformed Church and exploring Marsh and Bland Streets. I admire stone-built churches, historic sandstone buildings, quirky antique shops, and art boutiques — and even bump into a subscriber!

I pass by the Historic Cemetery before heading to The Point, a dramatic headland known for its natural beauty. There, I walk along the seafront and observe daily life in Mossel Bay, especially its appeal as a holiday destination. I attempt a short hike on the Cape St Blaize Trail toward the Cape St Blaize Lighthouse — but hit a slight obstacle! Still, the views are worth it. On the way back down, I pause at the War Memorial, which honors local soldiers who died in World War I and II.

My next stop is Mossel Bay Harbour. Before lunch, I share a few notes about the town’s economic background — including its prominent role in the 19th-century ostrich feather trade, and later, the development of the Mossgas refinery, which eventually became part of PetroSA.

Time to eat! I order a roosterkoek filled with a traditional South African braai favourite, and have a lively chat with the charismatic chef behind the braai.
