A Newark History Society program co-sponsored by the Newark Public Library.
Early LGBTQ history in Newark, for the period from the 1870s to the 1940s, is largely hidden, but glimpses can be seen in the archives. Professor Peter Savastano of Seton Hall University and Timothy Stewart-Winter of Rutgers University Newark will discuss their efforts at excavating this important history and examine how urbanization and proximity to New York City allowed sexual cultures to flourish a century or more ago. Beryl Satter, professor of American Studies and History at Rutgers-Newark, will moderate the discussion between the panelists and with the audience.
This hybrid in-person/Zoom webinar program is open to the public. Light refreshments. Free off-site parking at Essex County parking deck, 20-55 Bridge Street.
