Welcome to the first episode in our new dialogue series from the Academic and Community Research Implementation Programme (ACRIP). This series explores the importance of consensus capability as a structured approach to knowledge mobilisation—helping leaders and communities move from ideas to action.
In this dialogue, Rudi Page is joined by Divya Shah, an executive and leadership coach with over 20 years of experience in corporate, governance, and global initiatives. She currently serves with the International Coaching Federation and leads the network of coaches in the West Midlands. Her passion is helping leaders gain clarity and confidence to build inclusive workplaces where people can thrive.
What does it mean to be consensus capable? Divya explains that consensus involves more than just general agreement. In today’s rapidly changing world, where AI can handle administrative duties, human leadership is about building shared commitment. True consensus isn’t simply agreeing in a meeting; it’s about ensuring every voice is heard and that people feel motivated to achieve results.
When decision-making is dominated by a few individuals, others may feel excluded, which stifles creativity and weakens commitment. In contrast, teams that encourage consensus benefit from collective intelligence, enhanced synergy, and stronger results.
Divya emphasises that building consensus requires skills often referred to as “soft,” such as listening, patience, respect, and non-judgment. These are truly essential human skills. Leaders should foster environments where every voice is heard and valued, reflecting Nelson Mandela’s advice to be the last to speak.
To measure progress, Divya introduces the Consensus Capability Scorecard, a practical tool for assessing alignment, clarity, inclusion of diverse perspectives, and implementation success.
Scoring enables organisations to pinpoint strengths and areas needing improvement. Ultimately, consensus capability strengthens workplaces, improves well-being, and fosters creativity, ensuring no ideas are overlooked.
