Rovinj is one of the most picturesque towns on Croatia’s Istrian coast, famous for its colorful Old Town, narrow cobbled streets, and romantic Adriatic setting. Rovinj is a town on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, known for its bilingual Croatian-Italian heritage and a population of around 13,000 people. Originally an island settlement, it was connected to the mainland in the 18th century. The town’s history stretches back to Roman times, when it was called Arupinium or Ruginium, and it later came under Byzantine, Frankish, and Venetian rule. Venetian control from the 13th to the 18th century shaped Rovinj’s architecture and cultural identity, traces of which are still visible today. The Old Town is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets and pastel-colored houses rising up to the hilltop Church of St. Euphemia, a Baroque landmark with a bell tower modeled after St. Mark’s in Venice. Other highlights include the Balbi Arch, remnants of medieval walls, the clock tower, and nearby sites such as Monkodonja, a Bronze Age hill fort. Rovinj’s surrounding area also features the Golden Cape (Zlatni Rt) forest park and the Rovinj Archipelago, made up of around 20 small islands, which add to its natural appeal. Tourism is the town’s main economic activity, making Rovinj one of Croatia’s most popular holiday destinations, second only to Poreč in Istria for overnight stays. Visitors are drawn by its Venetian charm, lively cultural events, art galleries along Grisia Street, and its picturesque harbor. Alongside tourism, traditional industries like fishing and winemaking continue to play a role in the local economy, maintaining Rovinj’s blend of history, culture, and Adriatic beauty.
