Leopards Drop 77-73 Verdict To Kingsmen
Despite a combined 42 points from senior guards Matt Heyd and Billy Nicolini, the University of La Verne concluded its four-game road swing on a losing note as it dropped a close 77-73 decision to Cal Lutheran Saturday in Thousand Oaks.
Both teams shot well in the opening frame, as the Leopards made 16 of 31 field goals (51.6%) but were matched by the Kingsmen, which hit 18 of its 32 attempts (56.3%) to lead 46-40 at the half.
The Leopard defense improved in the second half as it held CLU to seven field goals in the final 20 minutes. However the Kingsmen would make 16 of their 21 free throw attempts after intermission.
Cal Lutheran continued to hold the lead throughout the second half but La Verne (6-14, 2-7 SCIAC) stayed close and pulled within two points with possession during the final minute of play. The Leopards however missed their field goal attempt and Andy Meier would hit two free throws after being fouled to clinch victory.
Heyd finished 6-10 from the field while converting on 10 of 11 free throw attempts for a game-high 22 points. Nicolini was 7-15 from the field while connecting on four three-point field goals to add 20 points. Mychal Thomas and Trevor Woodland chipped in with 8 and 6 points, respectively.
Meier and Andy Van Klaveren each tallied 20 points to pace CLU, which improved to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in coneference play.
The Leopards return home for the first time in 18 days to face Whittier College at Frantz Athletic Court on Wednesday. Tip-off is 7:30 pm.
