Cedar, Weir & Lower Doane Trail Loop | Hidden Gem in Palomar Mountain

Come along on a 4K hike through one of the most underrated loops in Palomar Mountain State Park: the Cedar Trail, Weir Trail, and Lower Doane Trail Loop. This 3.3-mile loop begins near the Doane Valley Campground and offers a mix of lush forest, peaceful creeks, and open meadow views—all packed into about ~700 feet of moderate elevation gain. The route starts with the ascent on Cedar Trail, connects to the historic Weir Trail (where you’ll pass a small stone dam), and ends on the tranquil Lower Doane Trail, following the creek through serene oak woodlands.

Expect the hike to take around 1.5 hours at a steady pace. Sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection are highly recommended, especially if visiting in the warmer months. Note: dogs are not allowed on this trail, and spring through fall is the best time to visit for ideal weather and greenery. This loop is perfect for those wanting a peaceful yet scenic escape into nature—without committing to a long or overly difficult hike.
