At –77°C, a woman in her sixties lives alone in a stone-walled cave house carved into a cliff face. Each day she climbs between the half-mountain cave and the narrow ledge below to tend her tiny sheep pen, struggling through the blizzard to keep the animals alive. After rescuing a lamb from an icy slush pit, her old leather boots fill with freezing water and begin to crack, forcing her to soften hides by the wood-burning stove, draw patterns, and stitch herself a new pair by hand. At the same time she cuts an old sheep into chunks and strips, salting and smoking the meat on a low rack outside the cave in the storm. When snow wolves start prowling the ridge at night, she circles the ledge in the blizzard, stringing noisy rawhide trip-lines, packing thorny branches under the rails, and lighting a low smoky fire. The wolves test the edge, rattle her traps, and finally retreat into the white darkness, leaving the stone house, the sheep, and her unfinished boots safe for one more night.
