The novel takes place in the town of Chester's Mills, Maine. On a “perfectly normal and beautiful autumn day AMI” residents discovered that their city was surrounded by invisible but impenetrable shields, planes and cars were falling. No one knows where the dome came from or whether it can be removed. There are about 100 characters in the book, including a Gulf War veteran,
a local newspaper owner, a paramedic, a sinister politician and his son, who keeps "horrible secrets" in a dark closet.
