Hello everyone, today I have come to Suzhou Shishan Cultural Square.
The Shishan Cultural Square was built on the original site of Suzhou Amusement Park. From the square, you can still see the roller coaster view across the lake, which was retained from the amusement park. Behind the roller coaster is the famous Shishan Hill of Suzhou. However, the most striking feature of the square is the three uniquely designed buildings: Suzhou Museum West, Suzhou Shishan Grand Theatre, and Suzhou Science and Technology Museum • Industrial Exhibition Hall. These three buildings are full of futuristic technological design, and strolling through them feels like being in a sci-fi world.
The Suzhou Museum West was designed by GMP Architects, the top architectural design firm in Germany. The designers combined traditional and modern elements to create a building that embodies both the charm of Jiangnan and a modern atmosphere. It has won the highest honor in Chinese architecture—the Luban Award. The Museum West consists of ten box-shaped buildings, each 25 meters long, connected by glass corridors that open to the sky. From above, these box-shaped buildings form a unique visual effect, but inside, they are interconnected as a whole. The Museum West covers an area of 48,365 square meters, with an exhibition area of 13,391 square meters. It displays over 2,100 cultural relics, including items such as the Liangzhu period jade cong, the Tang-Five Dynasties gilt paper Lotus Sutra, a Yuan Dynasty gray pottery loquat tribute vessel, and a Shunzhi period "Tian Nv" (Heavenly Maiden) dispersing flowers bowl, among other precious cultural relics. The Museum West has been open to the public since September 2021.
The Suzhou Shishan Grand Theatre was designed by SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa), continuing SANAA’s architectural philosophy of lightness, fluidity, and harmony with nature. The undulating glass curtain wall roof reflects the overall impression of Shishan, gently and elegantly floating like clouds over Shishan Park, blending with the surrounding environment and bringing people closer to nature.
The Suzhou Science and Technology Museum was designed by Perkins & Will. Its eye-catching cantilevered beams make the building look like a scene from a sci-fi movie. The swirling main exhibition hall resembles a jade ruyi scepter, lying across the green mountains and waters, seamlessly connecting with Shishan hill, symbolizing the fusion of science and nature.
