The Royal Air Force is considering purchasing additional Airbus A400M Atlas airlifters to strengthen its air mobility capability, driven by strategic and operational needs highlighted in recent developments.
Strategic Defence Review: The UK Ministry of Defence is evaluating the purchase of additional A400Ms as part of the ongoing Strategic Defence Review. The review is assessing all capability requirements, including tactical airlift, to address long-term fleet resilience and meet growing global demand. Secretary of State for Defence Maria Eagle stressed that the airlift requirement is being actively considered.
The RAF currently operates 22 A400M aircraft, which form the backbone of its tactical and strategic airlift fleet. The A400M is one of the world’s most advanced airlifters, capable of carrying up to 37 tonnes of cargo, 116 personnel or heavy equipment such as helicopters up to 8,900km. It supports a range of missions, including aerial refuelling, medical evacuation, airdrops and operations on unprepared runways.
