With 135 UN members who acknowledge its independence, Palestine still lacks recognition from the US and Israel. So what's the deal? Why isn't Palestine a state?
On May 13, the Vatican announced that it would formally recognize the "state of Palestine" in a new treaty. It was met with a mix of reactions from Palestinians, Israelis, and others from the international community. The move carries a good deal of symbolic weight as more and more countries formally recognize Palestine as a state-the notable exceptions of Israel and the U.S. withstanding.
Palestinian leaders welcomed the announcement. Husam Zomlot, a senior Palestinian foreign-affairs official, told the New York Times the announcement carries a "vast moral significance". Israeli leaders, on the other hand, viewed it as a step backwards in the process of achieving any kind of viable peace process. The Vatican's announcement came out the same time as the first official statement from Israel's newly formed governing coalition. Led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the government promised to advance the peace process, but the language was very careful to use "the Palestinians" rather than the "Palestinian state" or any variation. Some experts who monitor the Israel-Palestine conflict are wary of Netanyahu's commitment to pursuing a lasting path to peace.
The Vatican is the latest major international body to recognize the state of Palestine. As of now, there are 135 countries that officially recognize it, many of which did so in 1988 when the Palestinian Liberation Organization declared its statehood. Since the last round of peace talks fell apart in 2014, officials from the Palestinian Authority have been taking a diplomatic approach to advance their cause.
