Rava Pongal – Delicious South Indian Breakfast
Rava Pongal is a comforting and flavorful South Indian breakfast dish made with semolina (rava/sooji) and moong dal (yellow split lentils). It’s a variation of the traditional Ven Pongal, replacing rice with rava, which gives the dish a lighter texture and quicker cooking time.
Known for its soft, melt-in-the-mouth consistency and fragrant tempering, Rava Pongal is both nourishing and easy to digest—making it a popular choice for morning meals, especially during festivals.

Ingredients
Rava – 2 cups
Moong dal - 1 cup
Ghee – 2 ½ tbsp
Jeera – 1tsp
Pepper – 2 tsp
Finely chopped ginger – 2 tsp
Split cashew nuts – 6
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp (optional)
Asafoetida powder – ½ tsp
Water – 11 cups
Salt – to taste
Process
Take 1 cup of moong dal in a pressure cooker
Saute this over medium flame for 1 minute
Add 3 cups of water,1 tsp of ghee and ½ tsp of turmeric powder (optional)
Cook it over medium flame
Turn off the flame after 5 whistles
When the pressure comes down, open the cooker
Mix well and keep it aside
Heat 2 tbsp of ghee in a thick bottomed pan over medium flame
Add 1 tsp of jeera, 2 tsp of black pepper
Saute this for a few seconds and add 2 tsp of finely chopped ginger, 6 split cashew nuts and 1 sprig of curry leaves
Saute this for some time and add 2 cups of rava and ½ tsp of asafoetida powder
Saute this for 2 minutes
Now add 8 cups of boiling water little by little and mix well
Add a little salt and mix well
Now add the boiled moong dal
Mix well and cook it over low flame till it thickens
Turn off the flame and keep it aside for some time
Add 1 tsp of ghee and mix well
Serve with sambar or coconut chutney
