GPS collars are usually placed on elephants to track their location and route. This collar is worn by the leader of the elephant herd or by a female. The reason for this is that the other elephants in the herd do not abandon the leader elephant. The battery life of this collar is about 5 years. This collar falls off the elephant's neck after the battery life reaches 5 years. GPS is based on a network of satellites using which the location of an object on the ground can be obtained to within a few meters’ accuracy. So, these new collars obtain an extremely accurate location for the elephant every four hours, night and day. Then they transmit that information (6 locations for each day) once a day to another satellite that relays it back to the ground. In this way, we can get extremely precise data on elephant movements every 4 hours, and we can answer a great many questions that are relevant to management.
Wildlife officials decided to put a collar on this elephant, which was displaying extremely violent and aggressive behavior. Wildlife officials had to work hard to anesthetize this elephant, which has an unusual body and height. When the anesthetized elephant was about to be collared, it regained consciousness and kicked the forest officials. Fortunately, no wildlife officers were killed, but one officer was injured. The elephant, having regained consciousness, shook its neck so quickly that the collar hit the forest officer's hand, injuring him. The officer was then quickly hospitalized.
