Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana staged their latest show with an atmosphere of unabashed lavishness, featuring chandeliers festooned with real flowers, vines, and an enormous gilded mirror. The collection itself drew inspiration from Domenico's native Sicily, specifically its baroque religious traditions, and was heavily infused with gold bullion. Capes played a starring role, mirroring their presence in the men's show. When they were long to the knee, rendered in black and gold, they recalled a cardinal's vestments. White lace frocks suggested communion dresses.
The silhouettes generally moved away from the body, offering a newness compared to previous seasons' va va voom shapes, though the sheer materials ensured they were not entirely demure. Contributing to a sweeter than usual mood were colorful needlepoint florals and prints of cherubs. The finale parade emphasized more covered looks, featuring black lace coats, dresses, and skirtsuits intricately embroidered in metallic gold thread, pushing the house's vocabulary with positive results.
