The Shinsengumi, which was established as a vigilante group to oversee the city of Kyoto under the protection of the Kyoto Shugoshoku, attacks the Ikeda Inn where a group of ronin who plan to burn down Kyoto have gathered. Led by Kondo Isami (played by Tetsuya Watari), Hijikata Toshizo (played by Hiroaki Murakami), and Okita Soji (played by Shunsuke Nakamura), the Shinsengumi slashes through the enemy forces. The Shinsengumi, whose fame spreads throughout the country after this battle, continues to fight against the tide of the times in the tumultuous city of Kyoto.
This is a historical drama series that aired on TV Asahi from October 8th to December 30th, 1998, with a total of 10 episodes. The content of the series is based on a collection of 15 short stories with the same name, incorporating the birth and collapse of the Shinsengumi in "Ryoma ni Kakeru". Fans will be captivated by the delicate beauty of Nakamura Shunsuke, who was selected to play the role of Okita Soji in his first period drama appearance. The ending theme song "Sayonara" is sung by Chiharu Matsuyama, who also made his period drama debut and delivered a passionate performance as Kambei Serizawa in the second episode. The first episode, directed by the masterful Eiichi Kudo, depicts the intense battle at the Ikedaya Inn, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.
